SUMMARY: A comprehensive analysis of alternatives for the proposed construction of landfills (artificial islands) in the Bay of Panama was conducted as part of the proposed South Corridor transportation infrastructure project. This is a significant project that links the new airport in Panama City at Tocumen with centrally located in the district of Punta Paitilla city, where previously operated the airport but due to the progressive urban development should be moved to the outskirts of the city.
RESULTS: The analysis considered the environmental, social and economic impacts and concluded the desirability of modifying the project to limit all the possible negative impacts of possible fillings. The project involved technical assistance and advice of stakeholders before the International Finance Corporation in Washington DC, USA, in addition to the consideration of multiple aspects related to the project alternatives involving a major infrastructure investments in that country times. This is a project in the form of BOT (Build Operate Transfer) involving a concession to 25 years that proposed the initiative for construction of landfills in the Bay of Panama as a source of project financing.
